New methods for fleshing out your character's life and lineage before adventure!

Five Torches Deep: Origins is the fourth official supplement for the best-selling 5e + OSR game, Five Torches Deep. It includes:

  • A dozen flavorful ancestries
  • A life path generator
  • 22 lineage traits
  • 8 cultural resources
  • 8 cultural structures
  • Three new classes

Written, laid out, and designed by Ben and Jessica Dutter, art by Sam Mameli, and sensitivity editing by Pam "the Dovetailor" Punzalan. The book expands character creation options and improves some of the issues inherent in 5e and similar rpgs (especially the explicit and implicit bioessentialism). The book is 17 pages long and in PDF only (with internal hyperlinks and comprehensive bookmarks).

Works great for Five Torches Deep, 5e, or any six-stat OSR-friendly game.

I like this a lot. I'm one of the few GMs I know who likes race as class and as I read through the FTD core rules, the one thing I wanted was demihuman classes. Now the game is almost perfect for my campaign. The one thing that would have made it better would have been a Half-Orc Paragon but that's easy enough to homebrew. Thanks.

Hi.
So, I haven't finished reading the book (read some, skimmed the rest), but I have some questions. I don't have any issues with the content of this book and appreciate the intent behind it, but I am honestly trying to understand certain things. Just one example:

"In Five Torches Deep, ability scores do not define every aspect of a character. Their INT score doesn’t reflect their overall intellect or capacity for learning; STR doesn’t define how athletic or powerful they are."

This seems to imply that a Halfling with a strength of 5 is just as powerful as a Dwarf with a Str of 18. Shouldn't this mean that every character can lift the same amount of weight?

I understand and agree with the notion that all races/ ancestries/ whatever are equal *overall* but I find it odd to suggest that they are all equally good at everything. This would mean, for example, that a pixie who hits the gym regularly should be able to hit the same levels of strength as a giant....See more

I am writing this to be a bit more clear.

Racism in the real world comes from the idea that one skin colour is somehow superior to another. It can also refer to harmful stereotypes. The key difference in fantasy games is that the various races are *literally* different species. They evolved (or were made by their deities, depending on your campaign) to have certain traits.

A dwarf will on average be stronger than a halfling. This does not imply superiority and there are certainly individual halflings who could overpower the average dwarf. What it means is they are physically different. A dwarf has a denser bone structure and musculature. That also means it’s reasonable for them to reach a level of strength that a halfling cannot Both races are equal in terms of their intrinsic worth, but equal doesn’t-- and shouldn’t-- mean “the same.” Making all races homogeneous actually diminishes diversity, which I think is not the best idea, especially given that many play RPGs to assume...See more

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Bioessentialism or not, the end result is that this supplement gives the 5TD players much more options in their character making. That's a win in my book.

Imagine accusing someone of being a "hyper-sensitive SJW snowflakes" - or some such juvenile crap - after getting angered by an RPG supplement. If anything, such displays of fragility towards the topics of race and gender are a ringing endorsement for this product. I'd sooner buy my gaming products from people with a reality-based understanding of genetic variation and the intersection of culture and biology than from some coward hiding their reactionary values behind complaints of "ruined escapism" and "wokeness".

I honestly don't see anyone expressing anything close to anger in these reviews, nor is anyone showing fragility. What you're seeing is disagreement, which is what people do when they see things differently.

People who disagree with you are also not cowards. Indeed it is only yourself who appears angry at anyone.

the FTD main book is an outstanding product and the one I currently use, but the ramblings at the end of this book seem to indicate that the author either doesn't understand the origins of the Tabletop RPG or is being disingenuous about their understanding in order to virtue signal.

Perhaps my favorite example of them tripping over their own attempts at political correctness is at first saying that no culture is superior to any other and then allowing us to randomly generate a culture based on Tyranny and Slavery, two very immoral concepts inferior to Freedom and...Freedom.

How do I get a refund for this Woke, SJW drivel attempting to politicize the hobby my friends and myself try to use to escape this rubbish.

Weird book. Not sure when I'll get the chance to use it, but I do have 2 dead PCs so maybe I'll break it out there. Question about paragons. Do you roll their stats the same way you'd roll up for the vanilla FTD races or do you roll the ancestry way? Also did you change the rolls? I remember a human being 3d6 in order and now it looks like it's 4d6 drop the lowest. Also what does RES stand for?

Paragons assume you’re using the ancestries in Origins, but it doesn’t hurt to do it the core book way. Yes all of the lineages were made more balanced by doing 4d6 drop, this brings them a tiny bit closer to 5e math. RES is short for Resilience, which is discussed in the core book.

Thanks! I guess i forgot about resilience, but i dont think theyve spent enough time in the dungeon for it to matter. If I'm using more OSR stuff and less 5e stuff would you recommend just sticking with the core rolling or is it merely a matter or preference?

Purely preference. It makes only a very slight difference here and there.

Are there plans for a collected print edition of the expansions? I really don't like using PDFs, personally, but you've done great work and I want to continue to support 5TD.

This is a great book overall and an awesome addition to Five Torches Deep. If you are wondering why some people are complaining about "wokeness" in their reviews, it is because there is a smart, well thought out explanation at the end of the book concerning bioessentialism and it's history in fantasy gaming. Personally, I feel that this is the kind of forward-looking writing TTRPGs need. it shows an understanding of the hobby and a desire to help it grow. Great work, keep it up! 5 stars.

This supplements is wonderfully weird and cool. It has great ideas useful to many other roughly compatible games like most OSR-games or even 5E, I loved the idea corpsefleas or how about playing a character who is amorphous. This is the sort of wild and a bit gonzo stuff I love about roleplaying games.

As an OSR fan I am really happy with FTD and its supplements. Sigil Stone and the Dutters have put out some really good "Indy" products. I also appreciate Ben's attention to his product and responding in the comments section here.

I will say that I am of the camp that wished the PC Police didn't leave their mark on this product. In the words of dads everywhere "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed."

I purchased this book knowing it had the Bioessentialism section, and I will use it along with the other FTD supplements but I will simply ignore those ideological bits.
I would like to address those who defend the ideology inserted into the product. One reviewer asked this question:
“Those of you who had an emotional reaction to this page I again ask: Why does THIS elicit your ire? Your annoyance? Perhaps you are simply a reactionary, or maybe you have some deeper seated issues or insecurities that you need to resolve. Regardless, you should seek a proper...See more

Thank you for pointing out in the description that this game has surrendered to the SJW monsters. I appreciate your saving me the money and time. 5TD was otherwise an interesting rules-light system, and a valiant effort to provide a pathway from 5E to OSR.

Since my review was removed by the complaints of a few sensitive souls, I’ll try to distill my thoughts on this product here with some additional caution, as to not offend further.

First off, you will not find a bigger FTD fan than myself. I absolutely love the game. In fact, it leaves other similar efforts miles behind. The simplification of the magic system, the 4 basic classes, and the attempt to instill the OSR philosophy to a population of 5E players is not to be understated. In addition, the innovation with Load, Supply, and Light is a revelation to me as a person who has played TTRPGs since 1979.

Having laid all of that praise, let me get to my point about this specific product.

I really only have a few concerns about this product:

1. Attempting to re-define Ability scores. To say that “INT score doesn’t reflect their overall intellect or capacity for learning; STR doesn’t define how athletic or powerful they are.” Is an about-face to nearly...See more

There’s no intentional silencing here. Any rating and review on DTRPG is kept (you’ll note that you left a rating, 2 stars, which remains when you click “view all ratings.”) Also note that I publicly responded to you and offered you a refund. Our entire comment thread here (posted as a Discussion comment rather than a Review) was flagged and removed as inappropriate.

Your above discussion is perfectly appropriate and you’re of course entitled to your opinion. Thanks for the support and like we said here and on the Kickstarter, we are always happy to offer refunds.

Another amazing product that is well worth the $4.50 US. As I stated in my review, your acknowledgment of these issues is something commendable. Anyone who takes such issue with the last page had ample time to read the Kickstarter which very clearly stated Sigil Stone's values and position, and if they disagree so vehemently they can simply ignore the page and still use the amazing resource that this is for one of the best game systems I have seen in my time. I have been playing tabletops for a bit less than a decade now, and have been game mastering for about 3/4ths of that time, and I can say that this system is brilliant and innovative, with each expansion adding more and more ideas and fun rules to play and experiment with. It's compatibility with 5e makes it easily accessible and even applicable in reverse.
Thank you for creating and continuing to create this wonderful system!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
