Baby Bestiary: Caretaker Warlock (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Protect, Nurture & Ascend

Perhaps you were a student of magic, or maybe just an explorer. Whatever you once were, your entire life has changed since you have discovered this great creature.
Unlike most warlocks who are granted their power by making a pact with a extraplanar entity. You are bestowed your power by your selfless protection and nurturing of a young patron. Gaining power as the patron does, your relationship is that of caring and friendship, of course with the highs-and-lows of rearing a young, but very powerful creature.

Inspired by the Baby Bestiary, this supplement will provide you with a rework of the warlock, providing you with new invocations and new patrons to adopt (including the pheonix, couatl, dragon turtle, and dragon).

Other small supplements that may interest you.

Is this product still been updated? I ran into some problems when trying build a character with this.
Firstly, Entrusted Awareness grants you Darkvision when within 60 ft. of your patron, but it never specifies what's the range of this darkvision. If it's the same 60 ft. range then it's not very useful consider how many races in 5e already have darkvision 60 ft. or further, and it can also get eclipsed by Dragon's Sense.
Secondly, Why did Entrusted Servant remove all the extra familiar options that Pact of the Chain have? I was looking forward to let my Pseudodragon look after my dragon whelp...
And lastly a minor issue, why does the subclass for dragon whelp patron has two names? (Guardian of the Scaled Skies VS Guardian of the Dragon) Which is the right name?

I've seen mention of this product in a number of places (including reviews) and have been considering picking it up in anticipation of one of my players being interested. However I have a few questions...

1) What is the current state of the product? I've seen mention in some places that it is incomplete.
2) Is there a reason this product is 15 pages long on this storefront but allegedly 26 pages long elsewhere?

Hoping for great news, as this looks like a fantastic way to get some of my easily confused (and put-off) players to take more interest in the game.

Caretaker Warlock is definitely complete now.
Also, the page count was based on our first upload, which is now fixed to be consistent with our webstore

I absolutely love this! It adds a fantastic (and extremely adorable) new spin on the roleplaying aspect of being a warlock, the artwork is wonderful, and all the patron options are all very cool. I haven't gotten the opportunity to actually play a Caretaker Warlock yet, but hopefully I'll get an opportunity at some point.

All that being said, I am curious if you intend to add any new patrons? Either as an update or maybe a sort of sequel/add on thing? I think it would be interesting to see some infernal options, like maybe a hellhound pup or nightmare foal? Or maybe some more celestials, like a unicorn foal, or a Ki-rin... Whatever a baby Ki-rin is called. lol
Now I want to make it clear that I'm not complaining that what we already have isn't enough, the options we already have are great, and there are a lot of them for this kind of product. But this is such a cool idea, I think that expanding on it could only be a good thing!

Hey Gabe!
Glad you love the caretaker, at this point I dont have immediate plans on expanding it (as I have a few big projects taking my time), but I have a few ideas of which I'd be happy to revisit the caretaker (we also have a few other caretaker class ideas, that we want to experiment with).
Glad you love it!
Andreas

PS: in the Baby Bestiary Volume 2 we referred to a baby Kirin as a foal (this could vary based on how you portray your Kirin)

The Healing Flames invocation from the Phoenix. Is there a limit in how often or how much can heal from this otherwise it makes hit dice completely worthless... It doesn't state, but every discussion about healing cantrips have always seemed to rate them as changing the feel for the game.

Thanks for the catch! It was simply an oversight on my behalf. When I created it I was thinking more thematically than mechanically.
To fix it I'll limit it to 10 HP per day.
Thanks again!

Could I suggest CHA mod + Warlock level? Would start lower and scale better as it goes on?

Also, Create Bonfire is not on the warlock list and it's not provided in the other phoenix invocation, so it's a bit of a challenge to pick up really...

Wait, nevermind, it's just a XGE spell, I couldn't find it in the PHB and now that makes sense. :D

Is the Dragon Turtle's level 10 feature "Steam Breath" supposed to have a limit to how often you can use it? It says it takes an action and uses your Warlock spell save DC but doesn't say anything about how often can use it like X times per short or long rest or that it takes a Warlock spell slot. It seems too strong to be able to use every turn.

Also apologies if I'm reading it wrong and missing a listed limitation somewhere.

I also noticed now that you have two "Enlightened Eyes" under Invocations. One is on page 15 and has the same text as "Augmented Vision." The other is on page 16 and has a different description. The table of invocations on page 13 has both "Enlightened Eyes" abilities listed (one after the other) but does not have "Augmented Vision" listed on it.

Sorry. Am also a little confused on the benefit of the "Banish the Unnatural" invocation. Isn't Banishment a spell already on the Warlock spell list?

Hey Sean!
Thanks for picking the caretaker up! I'm just going to try and respond to all of your comments here instead of replying individually.

1) Dragon Turtles 10th level feature.
You're totally right there should be a limit on that.

2) Enlightened Eyes
Thanks for the notice! I'll get that fixed.

3) Banish the Unnatural
Yes, Banishment is a warlock spell (4th)...I believe my rationale was that by providing the spell through the talent, the warlock they would then be able to select other spells. That said, I could switch it out for Aura of Purity, which is thematically fitting for the couatl.

Thanks for getting back to me. For the third one called out because thought the warlock invocations for cast this spell once per long rest were not usually on their spell list but I could be wrong.

Played a level 10 caretaker in a oneshot recently. Very enjoyable roleplay around the concept. The other players loved getting rewarded for role-playing with me and my phoenix chick, during short rests. From a mechanical point of view, stacking the 1hp/lvl from phoenix, 1hp/lvl from hilldwarf and 2hp/level from tough feat, leads to a very chunky caster. Add on the health regen from the bonfire invocation and you can take some big hits!

Starting a new campaign as a Caretaker Warlock for a Phoenix next Sunday. I was never interested in playing a warlock before this, but the creative twist to the roleplay was to much for me to pass up. Not ready to write a review yet, but I can say that the art is very cute, there is at least typo that Joshua C. has already pointed out. , and maybe I would ask that the changes to skill proficiencies be more clearly labeled. It is pretty easy to miss and just default to the PHB warlock proficiencies. I also have a small concern that a level 20 Caretaker loses their level 6 play ability since your patron leaves you at level 20. Maybe this was intentional, but it is sad to see that ability go away. Don't want to end on a negative so I will add that the tables for Patron misbehavior and quirks are very good. I hope my DM does them justice.
Will post more when I have some experience playing the class at the table.

Thanks Neal for picking up the Caretaker Warlock!
I still need to publish an update (was testing some different layout ideas). In regards to the capstone ability, I was really torn about direction to take it (whether to keep the beast or have it ascend). I decided on ascension because the beast is a 'patron' after all, and not a pet (though you do have a good point about the 6th level ability which I will need to revisit). Anywho! Thanks for leaving an line and I look foreward to hearing more feedback from you and how your play experience with the caretaker played out.
All the Best

Currently going well. We didn't start as soon as we wanted so I have less feedback to give than I would like, but so far it has been great. At level 2 there isn't to much separating my Caretaker PC with a Regular Warlock, but I think that is good, nothing is broken and my DM is quick to agree it is overpowered or underwhelming. As a phoenix warlock I am a little bit tougher and can help with the party with Healing Word, and it is always nice to be useful to the party.
As I am approaching level 3 I have been considering the choice of Tome, Blade, or Servant and I found oddities in Tome that I wanted to address. More specifically the Tome's ritual invocation, which is missing three things from its regular warlock counterpart's text.

The first is that restriction that spells learned from this invocation must be cast as rituals unless learned as spells a different way. This reads to me that spells learned via the invocation have the option to be cast using a spell slot and not as rituals.

Great ideas, huge fan of the concept. I currently have a Tortle Cleric player in my game who has multiclassed into Warlock (because of this content) upon finding a Dragon Turtle egg, and she's loving it so far. The Dragon Turtle has hatched, and the Cleric has learned that it is actually the child of the Dragon Turtle goddess she worships, so right now she is basically worshipping Turtle Zues, and taking care of (and receiving power from) Turtle Hercules. Its been an absolute blast.

As far as the content of the pdf itself, I have a few suggestions:

1: While thematically renaming the warlock class features and invocations is cool, with the exception of the few patron specific invocations, it feels like a waste of space. I think it should be assumed that anyone who is playing a Warlock and wants to try a 3rd party archetype already has the PHB and so they don't need it all listed out for them again. It will save you a ton of time and effort on editing, not to mention the possible legal...See more

Hey Josh!
Thanks for the feedback! (I know I've already circled around and have an open dialogue going with you, but I'll respond here for those who are looking.
1) I was a little torn on the layout and how much information to present. I decided to just put all the reworked class info there so that someone looking at it has everything available to them. As to the legalness of it, I'll double check, this is technically released under the OGL and the warlock evocations are covered under that. But I'll double check to ensure there aren't any issues.
2) As to the HP, I'll post an updated version that provides more direction on how to use this supplement when using the 5e Baby Bestiary Companion rules as well as more information as it regards to health of the companion.
3) I'll double check these nitpicks as I probably moved the wrong set of text.

Update incoming and thanks for the feedback!

I'm enjoying the systems thus far, with a few minor adjustments, but I was wondering when the next update would be? I'd love to try the caretaker full rework for a new character, or potentially rebuild another I have.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
