Cornerstone RPG - Basic

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Cornerstone is a light, universal, RPG system toolkit. It is my answer to Freeform Universal, Fate, GURPS, and Savage Worlds. The game is 1d6, works with nearly any genre, and allows for quick setup and play.

  • Easy to play and run
  • 1d6 core mechanic
  • Every roll generates interesting results
  • No metacurrency or narrative points
  • Scalable to fit broad or focused game concepts

This is the basic edition, which is a cut down and simplified version of Cornerstone (to be released in the future), without as much advice or as many examples given. But, best of all, it is absolutely free, and contains everything you need to play an impromptu gaming session in your favorite setting.

Hey, I loved your system; it is so smooth and simple that it is a delight to read through it. I have only one question, and it's rather silly, with that being when one would use the character's Logic skill. In my experience, I feel that when logic is needed, it wouldn't be necessary to roll, but I would appreciate knowing how and when you use it in your games.

It’s for narrative purposes when you don’t want to put a player skill to the test. So for example figuring out a code, solving a puzzle, winning a game of chess, etc. Maybe the PC is very good at chess but the player doesn’t know the first thing about chess. It’s just like charisma or any of the other more head space traits.

My pdf copy of this only has 41 pages and seems to stop rather abruptly. Is this right? Or do I only have a partial download? I still like the system. When is the full Cornerstone coming out?

This contradicts the description which says "which is a cut down and simplified version of Cornerstone (to be released in the future), "

Is Cornerstone RPG - Basic open for fan translation? I'm an HK RPG fan and I would like to translate it to Chinese and post it online for free

I've got two questions regarding the rules:

If one of your Three Core Traits is beneficial and relevant to
your attempted action, you can trigger before the roll and:
○ Add +1 to your roll
○ Add an extra AND or BUT
○ Cancel out an AND or BUT

If I rolled an abnoxious success+BUT, why would I just want to cancel the BUT - when I can add +1 and not only lose the BUT but get an AND on top?

Regarding the talent/ability that a character never has to roll:
Is it correct that I can never get a BUT or AND result in those situations? It sounds weird that no one can excel (+AND) in the field he is most proficient in.
An ability can't be attack or defend, but is there clearly no situation where an ability might apply in combat (where the AND/BUT state is needed because damage/damage reduction depends on it)?

I could house-rule all of that easily but I am interested what solution you found in "official"...See more

Good questions Dirk!

1) You probably wouldn't. Very rarely have people removed a "But", but it is an available option in case someone wants to do it for some edge case that I hadn't thought of or encountered.

2) I believe I state somewhere in there that you can still roll to determine an And/But status on your roll, however the point of the always-success rules is to eliminate the delay of rolling and just do what makes sense. You can of course always choose to roll as a Task, but, I'd be happy to say that you can use your Ability and roll just to determine And/But.

3) There are plenty of situations in which an Ability is of use in a combat situation, or completely negates the need for combat rolls. Which would work nicely with the above answer.

Thanks again, hope you enjoy!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
